He will miss Southampton’s final Premier League games against Nottingham Forest, Fulham, Brighton & Hove Albion and Liverpool.

The left-back limped out of their 1-0 loss to Bournemouth after only 36 minutes with an ankle injury.

“Romain had his surgery yesterday in Cardiff, and it went well,” manager Ruben Selles said (via Southampton’s official website).

“He is back home this afternoon. The surgery went okay, but he will be out for the rest of the season and will probably rejoin the team at the beginning of pre-season for next year.”

Mohammed Salisu, Juan Larios and Tino Livramento will also miss the trip to the City Ground. However, Paul Onuachu will be fit for the game.

“Paul is fit,” Selles added. He came back to training a couple of days ago, and as long as there are no issues in the next few days, he will be available.”

Southampton have four games to avoid relegation, but it looks unlikely. They have failed to win any of their last nine games.

They have suffered defeats in five of their last six Premier League games. Even if they win their next four games, they will need their relegation rivals to lose.

They have signed over £150 million worth of players across the last two transfer windows. Many of them have failed to live up to expectations.
