Sørensen sees the positives despite Everton’s ongoing wait for home points | OneFootball

Everton are still awaiting their first points at home this season after being defeated 3-0 by Chelsea at Walton Hall Park yesterday.

The Blue Girls created chances against the reigning Barclays Women’s Super League champions but they again fell short on home turf.

When speaking to the media after his side’s defeat, Everton boss Brian Sørensen said that he couldn’t be any prouder of his team for their efforts.

“I’m proud of how we came out and proud of the bravery we showed,” Sørensen said. “We played through them and created chances but we need to convert those chances otherwise, it’s hard to get results.”

Sørensen went on to priase a number of his players for their performances against Chelsea. He was particularly pleased with the performance of summer signing Justine Vanhaevermaet.

He said “Yeah, Justine was what we wanted her to be; aggressive with tenacity in her game. She was also comfortable with the ball, so I really liked her performance today.

“Clare Wheeler played out of position against Niamh Charles who’s an England international and she kept her quiet, so that was a big performance. Meg (Finnigan) was back from sickness and worked really well in the centre and Yaya (Aurora Galli) was good.

“I think we put in a team performance. That’s what I expect of them and they did that, so that’s good.”

Another positive to be drawn from the game was the return of midfielder Sara Holmgaard. She came back into the squad after a long period out though injury. Holmgaard played her part in the incident which saw Vanhaevermaet have a goal controversially disallowed for offside. That was a decision that Sørensen did not agree with.

“When I watched it back, it was a goal,” Sørensen said. “They have to make the decision, so I’m not blaming the officials. They don’t have technology to help them but when you watch it back, it’s a goal.”

After picking up just four points from six games, Sørensen is aware of the pressure that surrounds him and his squad. With bottom club Bristol City up next, the Everton boss is hopeful that his side can bounce back.

He said “It’s still a long way to go and we are getting into games with teams that are around us. We have to show that we are a good side and we can win them.

“I have lots of confidence in the team and we look forward to Bristol next Sunday. Hopefully, we can get the first three points at home.”
