Son Heung-min’s father was recently quoted as saying that his son is “not world class yet” and hinted that he wants more from his career.
The Spurs star probably enjoyed the best season of his career to date in 2021/2022.
He shared the Golden Boot award with Mohamed Salah after bagging 23 Premier League goals – none of which came from the penalty spot.
And was instrumental in his team’s late rise through the league to snatch the final Champions League place away from city rivals Arsenal’s grasp.
Unsurprisingly, he was voted as Spurs’ Player of the Season but was very controversially omitted from the PFA Team of the Season – something which quite honestly is unbelievable given that he would have been a solid shout to win the Premier League Player of the Season award, never mind make the team.
But anyway, football fans have been left in no doubt about just how good ‘Sonny’ has been this past season and he’s rightfully built a reputation as one of the most lethal attackers in the league.
Although, it seems his own father might have a slightly different view on the matter…
Son Woong-Jung, Son’s father, reportedly said per CGTN News: “He (Son Heung-min) must work harder and make more progress
“If he is satisfied with what he has achieved now, crisis is on the way. He must always try to do better to stay in the best form, don’t you think? Instead of being happy to stay where he is, I always want him to be 10 percent better.”
Talk about a demanding father, ey? Most men can only dream of their lads going onto achieve what Son has done in recent seasons but it seems his father isn’t all that impressed as of yet.
Son senior then continued: “He must be able to play a solid role in one of the world’s top clubs. That’s when he will become a world class player.
“Like I said before, he must do 10 percent better on every front to reach that goal. He scored a lot of goals this year, but it doesn’t mean he will do the same next year.
“Only those who stay ready can survive the difficulties. He must face everything with a cautious mind and can’t afford to be too proud.”
He must be able to play a solid role in one of the world’s top clubs? Well, Spurs fans would argue that’s exactly what Son’s doing already…
