Yann Sommer on...

...the defeat against Leverkusen: “It’s a disappointing result. We got 2022 off to a brilliant start with the win over Bayern and this home defeat has put a bit of a dampener on it. We’re currently in a difficult situation.”

...the reasons for the defeat: “We were aware that Leverkusen had a lot of quality and power up front. They outplayed us at times with some of their pace and simply wanted it more than we did. They’re a top side who put in a great performance yesterday. But we also did lots of good things as a team. We started the game well, communicated with each other a lot and were well structured. If we’d have been a bit more vigorous and clinical in front of goal, the game could have gone very differently.”

...the push for a late equaliser: “I do wish we’d have found another goal late on. We gave it our all in the closing stages and played with real energy. With a bit of lick we could have rescued a point, and it’s a shame that we weren’t able to do that.”

...his two penalty saves: “It’s difficult to be pleased about saving two spot kicks in one match when you end up losing the game. Of course, you study the opponents a bit and get a feeling for which way they’re going to shoot. I guessed right on both occasions and so I was able to save both the penalties.”

...the current situation Borussia find themselves in: “We need to face the reality of it and accept the situation as it is. At the moment, we’re quite far down the table because our performances have not been consistent enough each week. We need to deal with this and play better in the coming weeks. We’re still confident in ourselves, which is important, because we need to be confident to support us in these moments.”

...the upcoming DFB-Pokal match in Hannover: “The DFB-Pokal is up next, which is another kettle of fish. We absolutely want to progress to the next round, and then look to get a result next weekend against Union Berlin in the league.”
