Arne Slot has admitted that “emotions got the better of me” after the Liverpool manager received a red card at the end of Wednesday’s Merseyside Derby with Everton.

Dramatic scenes followed the 2-2 draw at Goodison Park as players and staff got into a skirmish on the pitch. Abdoulaye Doucoure and Curtis Jones were both sent off, as were Slot and assistant Sipke Hulshoff.

The Dutchman confronted Michael Oliver at full-time and reportedly called the referee’s performance a “f***ing disgrace” before sarcastically saying he had a “great game” as they shook hands.

Speaking ahead of Sunday’s Premier League meeting with Wolves, Slot said that he would react differently if he could go back in time.

“There’s an ongoing process,” he told his pre-match press conference. “I have to respect that so I can’t go into details.

“The extra time that was five minutes and ended up being eight happens a lot. And the emotions got the better of me.

“If I could go back I’d love to have done it differently. I’ll hope to do if differently next time.”

Beto put Everton ahead in the 11th minutes, but Liverpool hit back soon after as Alexis Mac Allister headed home Mo Salah’s cross.

The Egyptian winger grabbed the lead in the second half, but the Reds couldn’t hold on for victory as James Tarkowski volleyed a spectacular equaliser in the 98th minute.

Jones confronted Doucoure after the Toffees midfielder celebrated in front of the Liverpool supporters, leading to a brawl that saw both players receive a second booking. Slot defended the 24-year-old’s actions, but said he would speak to him about the incident.

“I like a lot that he stands up for the team,” he said. “There are other ways for the team and the fans to do that. I’ll talk to him about it.

“It’s the same for me – I should have acted differently after the game but it’s an emotional sport. Sometimes individuals due to emotion make the wrong decision – that’s what I did.”
