Six City players have been named in England’s squad for this summer’s 2022 Women’s World Cup.

Ellie Roebuck, Alex Greenwood, Esme Morgan, Laura Coombs, Lauren Hemp and Chloe Kelly have all made Sarina Wiegman’s final 23 for the upcoming tournament which will take place in Australia and New Zealand.

Roebuck has featured for England 11 times, keeping six clean sheets. The 23-year-old has had another memorable season with City, featuring in between the sticks 22 times in all competitions.

Greenwood is one of England’s most experienced players heading out to Australia this summer, with 74 caps since her debut in 2014, and will be appearing in her third consecutive World Cup.

Also, one of the most decorated England players with two Arnold Clark Cups, the 2019 SheBelieves Cup, 2015 Cyprus Cup, 2022 Finalissima and the 2022 Women’s Euros, Greenwood will be looking to add the World Cup to her list of accolades.

Morgan earns her call-up after a positive return to the pitch after breaking her leg in 2022. The 22-year-old’s versatility to play centre-back or full-back will be of major use for Wiegman.

Coombs made her England debut in October 2015, featuring twice before a spell away from the Lionesses. Her hard work with City earned her a competitive recall in February 2023.

She was part of the team that won this year’s Arnold Clark Cup and the inaugural Women’s Finalissima.

Her dedication in City’s midfield has continued to impress Wiegman, scoring five times in her 28 appearances in all competitions, earning Coombs her first World Cup selection.

Hemp and Kelly will feature in their second summer tournament under Wiegman. Both played pivotal roles in England’s Euros win last summer, with Kelly scoring the winning goal against Germany in the final.

Kelly was called upon again in the penalty shoot-out of the Finalissima against Brazil, scoring the winning spot kick at Wembley Stadium.

Between the two of them, Hemp and Kelly have scored 16 goals and accumulated 25 assists in all competitions this season in City colours and will be looking to provide a constant threat to the defensive lines of international teams they face during the World Cup.

This summer’s tournament will debut a 32-nation competition and will be the first World Cup to be held across multiple confederations.

The opening match will be contested between New Zealand and Norway at Eden Park in Auckland on 20 July, with the final to take place at Sydney Olympic Stadium in Australia on 20 August.

England’s first game in Group D will see them take on Haiti in Brisbane on 22 July before travelling to Sydney to face Denmark on 28 July. In our final group game, we play against China on 1 August in Adelaide.
