Manchester City Want To Sign 34-Year-Old Moroccan International: Is It A Good Decision?

In recent years, Manchester City’s goalkeeping has seen moments of stability, but also episodes of doubt that are now reopening the debate over Ederson’s future. The Brazilian, a key player in the club’s most recent achievements, has shown cracks in his performance and rumours of his departure to the Saudi league are becoming more and more insistent.

Against this backdrop, names are emerging that could take his place in goal. Among them, Yassine Bounou, or Bono, stands out for his track record, character and a recent performance that had more than a few people checking their reports. His good performance against the Citizens themselves at the Club World Cup has not gone unnoticed and fuels an idea that returning to Europe from Arabia could be his next step.

According to a report from Fichajes, Pep Guardiola’s side are keeping a close eye on current Al-Hilal goalkeeper Bono. The English side’s intention are clear that they want to strengthen their goalkeeping in case Ederson decides to move on this summer. Bono, 34 years old, is coming off the back of a career that has seen him shine for Sevilla in Europe and for Morocco at the World Cup in Qatar.

His arrival would be a gamble on immediate performance rather than long-term ideas. Gianluigi Donnarumma, for example, is also on the list of options. However, Bono has in his favour experience and a cool head in big games. The final decision will depend on many variables, starting with Ederson’s departure, which would clear the way for a deal that nobody imagined just a few months ago.

Opinion:

In our view, Manchester City should think twice about whether Bono is really the right name to replace Ederson. His age poses a dilemma: gain short-term security or build with a young goalkeeper to ensure a decade of reliability. Bono’s performance against Guardiola’s side was impeccable, true, but one game should not be the only argument for closing an investment of this calibre.

His CV shines with the Europa League and an unforgettable World Cup, to be sure, but the Premier League demands reflexes and consistency every three days. Bono could offer a smooth transition while a younger replacement is brought in, but relying on a veteran goalkeeper as a central pillar is risky for a club that always aims for the top level.

We think the Donnarumma option would be more consistent with City’s philosophy: young talent, high ceiling and room for growth. Bono would provide immediate solutions and leadership, but his arrival should be part of a wider plan, not the only card. If Ederson leaves, Guardiola needs someone reliable, yes, but also a project under the sticks. Bono may be a valuable stopgap, but he should not hold back the search for a goalkeeper for many years to come.
