Sir Alex Ferguson reveals Manchester United came close to signing Jordan Henderson

Speaking at a virtual charity night for the Alzheimer’s Society (h/t Express), former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has revealed that the Red Devils came very close to signing Liverpool star Jordan Henderson.

The legendary Scotsman wanted to bring the Liverpool skipper to Old Trafford while he was still at Sunderland. Former Manchester United defender Steve Bruce, who had worked with Henderson at the Black Cats, had given a glowing endorsement as well.

Sir Alex has now revealed that the Red Devils were ready to make a bid for Henderson. However, United’s medical team scuppered the chances of a deal going through due to his running style that made him susceptible to injuries.

“The actual story was we were ready to make a bid for him at Sunderland. I spoke to Steve Bruce. Our scouting/medical department said they weren’t happy with his running style. They said he could be the type to get injuries. I had to make sure players would always be available.”

Ferguson, seemingly with a tinge of regret, insisted that everything that he has heard about Henderson, makes him feel like Manchester United missed out on a top player.

“But we loved Jordan as a player. He has proved that now. All the stories I hear about him tell me that I missed out on a really good person.”

Henderson signed for Liverpool from Sunderland in the summer of 2011. Since then, the 30-year-old has made close to 400 appearances for the Reds, winning the Premier League and the Champions League.

Manchester United will take on Liverpool in a top-of-the-table Premier League clash at Anfield on Sunday.
