Fisayo Dele-Bashiru, Ben Heneghan, and Dom Iorfa will all be assessed over the next 48 hours after suffering issues in Sheffield Wednesday‘s Carabao Cup victory last night while Michael Smith is due to be back in training on Thursday.

Wednesday were on the wrong end of a host of injuries last season but will be hoping to keep more of their squad fit this term as they push for promotion in League One.

Last night’s 3-0 victory over Rochdale in the Carabao Cup confirmed the Owls’ passage to the third round of the competition but it remains to be seen how costly that may be as Dele-Bashiru, Heneghan, and Iorfa all picked up issues.

Speaking to Yorkshire Live after the game, Moore provided an update on the trio.

“All three of them have taken a knock,” he explained. “We think Iorfa and Fizz’s are knocks. Ben’s is muscular but it is too early to say (how long they will be out).

“Ben said he came off as a precaution. Fizz and Dom were both knocks. We will assess them over the next 48 hours. Hopefully, they won’t be too serious.”

There is some good news, however, as Moore also revealed that the decision to substitute Mark McGuinness at the break was pre-planned.

He said: “We always wanted to give him 45 minutes tonight. He played Saturday and tonight was about giving him 45 minutes and bringing Ryan Galvin on.

“Mark is fine and Ryan came in and I thought he did well in the second half.”

Via BBC Radio Sheffield’s Andy Giddings, it has also been revealed that new signing Mallik Wilks is in contention for Saturday’s game against Forest Green Rovers while Smith is due back in training on Thursday after recovering from a thigh injury.

The Verdict

Wednesday have a good-sized squad with plenty of quality but there will still be concern, both at the club and amongst the fanbase, about the trio that are set to be assessed over the next 48 hours.

Moore has indicated he’s hopeful that all three are not too serious, which is positive, but time will tell if that optimism is well placed.

Injury issues made the first half of last season difficult for Wednesday and they’ll be desperate to avoid similar problems this term as they chase promotion once again.

Hopefully, Moore will be able to deliver some good news on the trio in question later in the week.
