Sheffield Wednesday have missed the payment of wages in March, May and June this year
Sheffield Wednesday are expected to satisfy their payroll on time for the month of August amid reports of takeover talks with ex-Crystal Palace owner John Textor.
According to journalist Rob Staton, Owls owner Dejphon Chansiri is finally set to pay players and staff on time after late payments in March, May and June, and he is also set for crisis talks with the EFL over possible transfer business.
The Yorkshire outfit have endured a difficult summer, with several key first-team stars departing due to the issues surrounding their wages.
The likes of Josh Windass, Michael Smith and Akin Famewo have left since the end of the previous campaign, along with the sales of Djeidi Gassama and Anthony Musaba, as well as head coach Danny Rohl departing in July.
It has been claimed that Sheffield Wednesday will indeed pay the players and staff of the club on time for the month of August, after previous uncertainty.
Owner Dejphon Chansiri has been under scrutiny from supporters to sell his stake in the club due to cashflow issues that have left wages unpaid on multiple occasions in recent months.
Fortunately for the club, August’s payments are expected to arrive on time amid rising takeover speculation.
It was reported by The Guardian earlier this week that former Crystal Palace shareholder Textor is flying into the United Kingdom amid hopes for face-to-face talks with Chansiri over a deal for the club.
Chansiri has set a £100 million asking price for Sheffield Wednesday, but it remains to be seen whether the American businessman will be willing to match that figure or if a compromise will be needed.
While there was believed to be some uncertainty over this month’s wage payments, the optimism that has emerged could bode well for these potential takeover talks.
It has also been reported by Alan Nixon that Sheffield Wednesday are holding “crisis talks” with the EFL about signing players.
Their transfer embargo was lifted earlier this month by the EFL, and Chansiri is hoping he will be allowed to add players to Henrik Pedersen’s squad, but the Thai businessman is under pressure to provide proof of funds.
It is believed that the club have a number of players ready to join the team, with sales also possible in order to help fund their planned transfer business, but the EFL want greater clarity on the Owls’ plan before giving any green light.
Pedersen’s side have made a slow start to the new Championship season amid all these issues behind the scenes, with the Owls earning just one point from their opening three fixtures.
This is a positive development for Sheffield Wednesday and should buy them more time to get a takeover done.
Textor’s interest appears to be genuine, and he could get the ball rolling on taking over the club from Chansiri now that he knows some players might be coming in to strengthen Pedersen’s side.
Wages being paid on time isn’t something to celebrate, but it is at least a relief, and possibly a sign that there is an end in sight for this miserable chapter in Sheffield Wednesday’s history.
If they can get some players in soon, and Chansiri can agree a sale, then perhaps the damage done to the club won’t have too many long-term ramifications.
