Wednesday made a horrible start to their season in the Championship, and even with Danny Rohl coming in as their new manager, it looked like there was very little for him to achieve.

However, the German has surprised many by getting the Yorkshire side firing and looking like a team who could easily beat the drop now, as they are just three points adrift of safety with still 20 games left to play.

So, this transfer window presents a chance for the club to make some changes in their squad, and it seems the loan market is an area they are looking at.

Sheffield Wednesday hold talks with Newcastle United about ending Jeff Hendrick’s loan

Sheffield Wednesday have made one new addition this month, and that was the capture of James Beadle on loan from Brighton & Hove Albion.

It now seems that the Owls are still looking at freeing up more space in terms of numbers and the wage bill, so more additions can be made.

This is despite already ending John Buckley’s loan spell because of his injury, while Tyreeq Bakinson joined Charlton Athletic on loan and this report from The Star suggest that goalkeeper Devis Vasquez could head back to AC Milan.

However, according to The Star they are not ending there, with this report stating that talks have been held between Wednesday and Newcastle about the possibility of ending Jeff Hendrick’s loan at the club.

The midfielder is currently recovering from an injury that has kept him out of action for a number of weeks, so Wednesday were keen to discuss whether a return to his parent club was possible. But, according to The Star, as things stand, he’s more likely to remain at Hillsborough than not, but that could change.

Jeff Hendrick’s stats for the 2023/24 season

Jeff Hendrick has been on the books at Newcastle United since 2020, when he joined the club on a free transfer from Burnley.

The midfielder was firmly a part of the club’s plans for the first two years, but since 2022, he has spent his time away from the club.

The Republic of Ireland international has had loan spells at QPR, Reading FC, and now Sheffield Wednesday.

Hendrick found himself a regular in the Reading team last season, but in this campaign, he has struggled for game time. The midfielder has played 10 times for the Owls so far in the Championship, with only five coming as starts.

Hendrick has managed just one goal during his time at Hillsborough, and that came in the 1-1 draw against Leicester City earlier in the campaign.

It was understandable why Sheffield Wednesday decided to bring in Jeff Hendrick in the summer, as he’s got plenty of experience at this level and at the top-flight level.

So, it was their thinking he would help the club adjust to the Championship again, but it hasn’t worked out like that, with the player struggling to play on a regular basis.

Obviously, his injury hasn’t helped him with game time, but even when he’s fit, he doesn’t seem like a player that Danny Rohl will be relying on. Therefore, the club would be smart in trying to end the players' loan, as they can fill that spot with someone that Rohl wants and plans on playing.
