Sheffield Wednesday's miraculous escape from relegation was confirmed as they beat Sunderland 2-0 on the final day of the Championship season.

It's been a tough season for the Owls but after the turmoil that greeted their promotion to the Championship last summer, they've done well to steady the ship and secure survival.

Wednesday will be hoping for a less chaotic summer this year and, alongside keeping hold of manager Danny Rohl, they'd do well to tie down winger Ian Poveda to a permanent deal after an impressive loan stint at the club.

Poveda arrived in January from Leeds United and was an instant hit, adding pace and directness to Wednesday's attack.

The 24-year-old has struggled with injuries, missing the last five games of the season, but the quality he showed towards the start of his loan means Wednesday would be wise to bring him back to Hillsborough and are unsurprisingly keen to do so.

Out of favour and out of contract at parent club Leeds, Poveda will likely be on the move this summer.

He won't be without potential suitors, and Wednesday will have to be quick if they want to fend off interest from elsewhere and secure Poveda's long-term future.

Poveda contract situation means he won't be short of interest

Poveda is out of contract this summer and will be available as a free agent.

This will only increase interest in the Colombian as he looks to find a new club, having failed to make good on the early promise he showed at Leeds.

Wednesday are among those looking to sign Poveda, according to The Star, and should they hold on to Rohl, then they will become a much more attractive proposition.

The club is on an upward trajectory with the German at the helm but after an impressive first season in English football, he too is said to be attracting interest from elsewhere.

A move for Poveda would represent the sort of backing Rohl needs to push this Wednesday project forward, though it remains to be seen whether owner Dejphon Chansiri is willing to be proactive in the transfer market.

It took Wednesday until August to sanction the arrivals of Anthony Musaba and Djeidi Gassama, who would both go on to play vital roles this season. Musaba arrived the day before the Owls' opening game of the season and Gassama joined up with the team midway through August.

Unsurprisingly, it took the pair a while to adapt, by which time Wednesday were already in the midst of a relegation battle.

The Owls can't afford to get off to such a poor start again next season and ensuring their new signings have a full pre-season will be vital to Rohl's plans.

Sunderland have had a disappointing season, finishing 16th in the Championship, just three points ahead of Wednesday.

They are set for another summer of upheaval with interest in their prized assets, Jack Clarke and Anthony Patterson, intensifying.

With one eye on Clarke's replacement, the Black Cats have identified Poveda as a cut-price alternative to the Englishman and look set to rival Wednesday for his signature.

Both clubs reportedly face competition from recently relegated Burnley, though, whilst Luton's interest could peak if their relegation from the Premier League is confirmed this weekend.

Wednesday are said to be in pole position, having already tried to negotiate a permanent deal for Poveda in January.

Beating out the likes of Burnley, Sunderland, and Luton could prove tough but doing so would be a real statement from the Owls, who can strike gold by reuniting with the winger ahead of next season.
