Football League World's Sheffield Wednesday pundit fears that his club will be unable to properly replace loanee Shea Charles this summer
This article is part of Football League World's 'Terrace Talk' series, which provides personal opinions from our FLW Fan Pundits regarding the latest breaking news, teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…
Doubts have been cast over Sheffield Wednesday’s ability to replace Southampton loanee Shea Carles this summer, with the midfielder set to be “a massive miss” next season.
Northern Ireland international Charles has impressed since joining the Owls on loan from Premier League outfit Southampton, but the Saints’ relegation – and interest in Wednesday boss Danny Rohl – makes the prospect of Weds keeping the midfielder look very slim.
Of bigger concern to Football League World's resident Sheffield Wednesday fan is that fact he believes his side will find it hard to replace Charles – or attract any quality for that matter.
Despite a more positive campaign than last season, where Sheffield Wednesday were kept up by the appointment of rookie boss Danny Rohl midway through the campaign, the mood at Hillsborough has been quite low compared to the Owls’ current midtable perch in the Championship.
Rohl’s relationship with owner Dejphon Chansiri has deteriorated to the point where the pair are not in regular contact, with the manager clearly frustrated by the lack of investment at Hillsborough.
Not only is Chansiri unable to invest further into the Owls, but once again Sheffield Wednesday’s owner has been late with payments.
Wednesday avoided a potential three-window transfer embargo by the skin of their teeth, paying late wages earlier this week, but any recurrence of that failure in the next three months will see the transfer ban kick in.
On top of all the uncertainty, Rohl has been linked to other jobs – including the manager role at Southampton, a club where he previously worked.
All of those factors cause Football League World's Owls fan pundit Patrick to fear the worst for this summer, who worries his side will be unable to attract new quality players, let alone replacements for Wednesday’s current stars.
Asked if he thought Wednesday would be able to replace Charles in the upcoming window, Patrick told Football League World: “Shea Charles will be a massive miss to Wednesday and I don't see there being any chance of us bringing in someone of similar quality to replace him, and that is for several reasons.
“First reason being that Danny Rohl’s links to Southampton were obviously key in getting him here in the first place.
“Come the summer, Danny Rohl isn't going to be here and most likely he's going to be managing Shea Charles at Southampton.”
Patrick went on to detail his fears that Sheffield Wednesday have earned a reputation for failing to pay players’ wages on time, and as such, will find it harder to attract players to S6.
Prior to their current flirting with an embargo, Wednesday were under threat of a registration ban back in November.
Patrick explained: “Secondly, with Dejphon Chansiri in charge, even though he eventually paid the wages, we are one day away from a three-window embargo.
“So if before the end of June a payment is missed to HMRC, or players’ wages, then that kicks in, and that automatically rules out getting anyone near his quality.
“Even if this three-window embargo doesn't come in, if you are a player, we're not exactly a very attractive proposition now with all the chaos and uncertainty at the club.
“When their agents are negotiating, they’ll be well aware that this is a club where last month's wages weren’t paid and that wasn't a one-off situation.
“It’s been about five times under Chansiri that has happened, so that will put players off joining us.
“Certainly Shea Charles is an absolute gem and unfortunately it is only negatives I can see for our transfer window in the summer.
“So no there’s not going to be a replacement for Shea Charles, I think it's going to be a struggle getting in any quality in the summer.”
