Goodman believes that Rohl will depart the Owls this summer unless owner Dejphon Chansiri leaves

Former footballer and current Sky Sports pundit Don Goodman believes that the only way Sheffield Wednesday head-coach Danny Rohl will be in charge at Hillsborough next season is if chairman Dejphon Chansiri sells up and new owners are in place.

Thai businessman Chansiri has come in for criticism for various different reasons since he took over as the Owls' outright owner and chairman in January 2015, and the way he has run the club over recent years has been opposed by the vocal majority of Wednesday supporters.

Things seemed to be looking up at Hillsborough last season though, as rookie German coach Rohl proved to be an inspired appointment in their quest to avoid relegation to League One, but this term has been a let-down both on and off the pitch, and it is clear that Chansiri and the 35-year-old do not see eye-to-eye on numerous issues.

Rohl has been linked with a move to become head-coach of numerous top-flight clubs both in England and abroad, and as long as the 56-year-old owner is still in charge, an extension to his stay in South Yorkshire seems unlikely.

Don Goodman offers 'broken' Danny Rohl and Dejphon Chansiri verdict

Rohl admitted earlier in the season that there had been a breakdown in communication between him and Chansiri with regard to January transfer window dealings, while the owner then had to insist that he did not have a problem with the head-coach in a shock fan forum that same month.

The Owls came within days of a three-window transfer embargo due to unpaid player and staff wages earlier this month, and Rohl told The Star that he was the "wrong person" to talk to about the issues, with a hint towards another lack of communication about board problems from Chansiri.

Despite their run-ins, Rohl has led Wednesday to what looks set to be a comfortable mid-table finish in the second-tier this season, and his quality and potential as a head-coach has seen managerless Premier League strugglers Southampton and German side RB Leipzig both linked with a move to appoint him soon.

The ex-Saints assistant coach has insisted that he will only decide on his future at the end of the season, but Sky Sports co-commentator and pundit Don Goodman believes that the relationship between him and Chansiri is beyond repair, and thinks that Rohl will leave Wednesday ahead of next season if he is still overseeing proceedings at the club.

Speaking exclusively to Football League World, Goodman said: “You probably suspect that the only way that Danny Rohl would be at Sheffield Wednesday next season would be if they had new owners, if a takeover had occurred.

“The relationship between him and Mr Chansiri seems to be broken in the extreme, and not one that looks like they’d be able to fix anytime soon.

“There are going to be possibilities available in the summer, there always is. Some of them may well look a lot more attractive to Danny Rohl than Sheffield Wednesday’s plight.

“Even if new owners come in, they’re going to have to convince him of their ambition and they’re going to have to give him a massive resource. Whether they can do that under FFP remains to be seen.

“It’s a difficult one to have a judgment on without knowing what is going on behind the scenes, really, but the only way that he will be at Sheffield Wednesday next season is if Mr Chansiri isn’t.”

Wednesday could be taken over soon - new reports have surfaced of interest

There looks to be some light at the end of the tunnel emerging for the Wednesday faithful, and new developments around a potential takeover soon could provide the club a huge boost in their task of keeping Rohl in place for next season.

Fan groups staged a protest against his ownership in the 10th minute of the Owls' recent Championship clash against Oxford United, as they turned their backs on the field of play to signify the 10 years that Chansiri has owned the club.

The Thai businessman moved to address such protests in a club statement earlier this week, insisting that he would be "happy to leave" his post as owner and chairman if the "right individual or group" were to come forward to make an offer for the club.

A new report from The Star has since emerged, which states that conversations have been had about potential investment into the Owls going forward. Any potential takeover is not believed to be imminent, or even close, but the club’s name is believed to be being discussed by wealthy individuals as a purchase option.

That will serve as a welcome update to most, if not all, Wednesday supporters who want to see Rohl's future resolved soon. He may well be on his way out of Hillsborough this summer, but he could look to stay if things progress on the takeover front, so that is effectively their only hope of keeping him in the face of apparent interest from higher-placed clubs.
