Sheffield United could still lose the 28-year-old this summer
Sheffield United have suffered a nightmare start to the 2025/26 campaign, losing their first four league games as well as crashing out of the EFL Cup.
Despite enjoying one of the best squads on paper, Ruben Selles’ side look disjointed, unorganised and miles off the levels that Chris Wilder’s team produced throughout the 2024/25 season.
Matters could still get worse for the Blades, as with just a day left of the transfer window, rumours have picked up again regarding a potential exit for midfielder Gustavo Hamer.
According to FourFourTwo, the Dutchman could still exit Bramall Lane this summer with Leeds United and PSV Eindhoven eyeing up a late swoop for his services.
A number of Premier League clubs have reportedly passed up on the opportunity to sign the midfielder, and it seemed like despite constant rumours about a potential exit, Hamer could remain a Sheffield United player this season.
However, the 28-year-old is now rumoured to be available on a loan-to-buy deal for as little as £15 million which would be a crushing blow for Sheffield United with such little time left in the window.
It could be argued that losing Hamer for this price would be doubly disappointing for the Steel City side, due to the nature of the deal.
Leeds United are thin in forward-thinking areas and as the transfer window ticks into its final few days, the Whites will become desperate to get any possible deals over the line as they aim to maintain their Premier League status.
Therefore, Sheffield United should be charging a much higher fee for Hamer than the £15 – 20 million that has been rumoured recently.
Considering the fact that the Steel City Side signed the Dutchman for up to £15 million two summers ago, it would be almost unbelievable to see them fail to make a profit on their asset.
He was the 2024/25 Championship player of the year and has consistently shown to be one of the best operators in the division, who definitely has what it takes to perform at a higher level.
Sheffield United raising their asking price would force Leeds to make a decision on Hamer during a critical moment in the window and it could see the Blades receive a much higher fee for the player.
On the flipside, they would retain the 28-year-old’s services for this season which would automatically boost their chances of fighting back up the table.
One factor that could still force Sheffield United into selling would be if Hamer is actively looking to pursue a move away.
Given the Blades’ incomprehensible start to the 2025/26 campaign, it seems like there is no chance that they can compete for automatic promotion and doubts will start to creep in about whether a top-six push is possible.
Hamer won’t want to be battling it out in the Championship’s no man’s land and therefore, may already be pushing for a way out of Bramall Lane.
If this is the case, the Steel City Side may have no option but to cash in on the star; otherwise they risk an unsavoury situation forming.
