Bayer Leverkusen's 5-0 thrashing of Werder Bremen to seal their first-ever Bundesliga title meant that Bayern Munich's 11-year run of dominance came to a screeching halt.

The Bavarian giants last failed to clinch a Bundesliga title way back in the 2011/12 campaign, when rivals Borussia Dortmund pipped Jupp Heynckes's Bayern to the summit of the German first division.

This was also the time when Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo were smashing goalscoring records seemingly every weekend in LaLiga, while Chelsea experienced European glory for the first time with Didier Drogba leading the charge.

Manchester City win their first league title in 44 years

It was Sergio Aguero's iconic last-gasp winner over Queens Park Rangers that saw Manchester City beat rivals Manchester United to their first league title in over four decades with 89 points and only separated on goal difference in the 2011/12 Premier League season.

Jurgen Klopp wins his second straight Bundesliga title

Jurgen Klopp's Borussia Dortmund were the last Bundesliga side to lift the German first division title before Bayern's 11 consecutive titles that began in the 2012/13 campaign. Not only did Klopp guide Dortmund to the league title in the 2011/12 season, but he also managed to bring the Bundesliga home to Dortmund's loyal supporters in the previous 2010/11 season.

Lionel Messi scores 91 goals in a calendar year

Before Lionel Messi was vacationing in south Florida, he was shattering records with Barcelona in sunny Spain. 2012 was the year that the eight-time Ballon d'Or winner recorded an astounding 91 goals in 69 matches across the calendar year for both Barcelona and Argentina, a feat that will more than likely never be topped.

Robin van Persie takes home the Premier League Golden Boot

In his final act as an Arsenal player, Robin van Persie tallied 30 goals in 38 Premier League matches in the 2011/12 season as the Gunners finished in third place behind Man City and Man United. Van Persie would go on to leave the north London outfit in the summer to join rivals Man United, but he still brought plenty joy to Arsenal supporters in his last season at the club.

Chelsea defeat Bayern Munich to lift Champions League title

Didier Drogba's 88th minute header canceled out Thomas Muller's 83rd minute strike to send the 2011/12 Champions League final between Chelsea and Bayern Munich to extra time and then penalty kicks. Chelsea were crowned champions of Europe for the first time in club history after Drogba powered the decisive winning kick past the legendary Manuel Neuer.

Montpellier beat PSG to 2011/12 Ligue 1 title

The last club not named PSG, Monaco or Lille to lift the French first division title was Montpellier in the 2011/12 campaign. While Montpellier may be flirting with relegation in the current season, their supporters will never get the feeling of watching their club win Ligue 1 and beat the likes of PSG and Lille to the coveted trophy.

Spain claim 2012 European championship over Italy

Spain lifted their second consecutive European title after a commanding 4-0 victory over Italy in the 2012 final under the iconic Vincente del Bosque. La Roja's Golden Era that brought home the 2008 Euros title as well as the 2010 World Cup was capped off in style thanks to goals from David Silva, Jordi Alba, Fernando Torres and Juan Mata.
