Seven Croatian fans have been placed in police custody after they were spotted performing Nazi salutes during yesterday evening’s 2-0 defeat to France, according to the Prefect of the Paris Police, Laurent Nuñez.
The Prefect explained on X (formerly known as Twitter) that security measures had successfully apprehended Croatian supporters during the match, “The security measures put in place by the police prefecture, under my authority, ensured the safety of supporters and players arresting seven individuals who performed Nazi salutes during the match.”
Nuñez added, “Sport is and must remain a celebration. These individuals have no place in a sports arena.” In 2023, a Croatian court sentenced eight Croatian supporters to prison terms lasting up to two months for racist chants that glorified the country’s World War II pro-Nazi regime during a 1-0 defeat to Turkey.
France managed to nullify a 2-0 deficit after the first leg of their Nations League quarter-final against the 2018 World Cup finalists thanks to goals from Michael Olise and Ousmane Dembélé. However, it would take penalties for the two teams to be fully separated, which France won 5-4 setting up a semi-final meeting with Spain.
