Serie A has thrown up some surprises this season. It’s also confirmed things we already thought we knew.
On the one hand, Krzysztof Piątek is equalling long-standing goalscoring records. On the other, Juventus top the league and Frosinone are awful.
Without further delay, we’ve had a crack at picking a team of the season so far.
An exhilarating season so far, capped by a brilliant performance against Bologna and his first national team call-up. The goalkeeeper is on the verge of becoming a household name around Europe with showings like this.
The best right-back of the season so far and it isn’t even close.
He’s constantly improving at the back but it’s going forward where the Portuguese international really excels. Well-timed overlaps, an excellent delivery. The perfect modern full-back.
Like last season, he does everything you want a defender to do. That includes making very few mistakes.
Week after week, Škriniar is absolutely solid.
Following on from Stefan de Vrij is no easy task but Acerbi has done excellently for Lazio so far.
Solid, experienced, confident. And you get the impression there’s even more to come.
Perfect. So perfect, we’ve moved him out to left-back to squeeze him in.
Chiellini is not only excellent and consistent but he maintains his level in the biggest games. Lazio and Napoli couldn’t find a way around him.
We’re putting him in his natural midfield role but Boateng has been dominating Serie A defences so far this season, leading the line for Sassuolo.
Three goals and an assist already, he’s the focal point of the Sassuolo attack and the role is made for him.
The Brazilian has been impeccable until.
Corriere dello Sport call him “Man everywhere”, which explains itself. A great passer, a diligent defender. Allan is indispensable for Napoli.
The most exciting talent in Italian football, Federico Chiesa is having a breakthrough season.
Though he was already an ever present last season, the winger has gone on another step this season and is now central to everything Fiorentina do.
A new manager, a more central position, a new Lorenzo Insigne. Well, maybe not, but certainly an Insigne at a new level.
The attacking midfielder has stepped up his game with more responsibility on his shoulders and is now by far Napoli’s most important player. To underline that, he’s already got six Serie A goals this season.
Gervinho arrived in Parma to skepticism but he has looked like the ideal man for the team and the way they play.
Every defence in Italy looks terrified of his speed, including Inter and Juventus. The man has exceeded all expectations.
Piątek plays, Piątek shoots, Piątek invariably scores.
He’s the first player to score in his first seven Serie A appearances since Gabriel Batistuta in 1994. How could we not pick him?
