Almost two months on from the horse-riding accident that had left him in intensive care with serious head injuries, Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Sergio Rico may now have a chance at returning to football.

The Spaniard is now out of intensive care, having been in a coma for 19 days in total. His wife, Alba Silva, has indicated that he had recovered parts of his memory and was able to communicate again. Earlier this month, the 29-year-old gave an encouraging first public statement since the accident.

As reported by Le Parisien, via Marca, the shot-stopper’s condition continues to improve, while he remains at the Virgen del Rocío hospital in Sevilla. Neurologist David Pérez, who was interviewed by Marca, has indicated that Rico will undergo another operation to block an aneurysm. Pérez added that the player was showing no signs of any neurological injuries, although he did suffer serious bruising on the skull, which saw doctors place him under an artificial coma. Asked about whether Rico could then continue his playing career, the neurologist concluded that in the absence of neurological injuries, patients are usually able to make full recoveries.
