The first half was made up of two penalties awarded to Senegal – before being taken away.

In the 35th minute a clash between Burkina Faso goalkeeper Hervé Koffi and Senegalese midfielder Cheikhou Kouyaté led to the referee Bamlak Tessema initially awarding a spot-kick before reversing his decision after being referred to the pitch side monitor.

Aliou Cissé’s side thought they had been given another golden opportunity in first half stoppage time when Idrissa Gueye’s shot was blocked by Edmond Tapsoba.

Tessema booked the Bayer Leverkusen defender and awarded a second penalty after it appeared to hit the hand of Tapsoba but another spot-kick was cancelled on second viewing.

Those incidents weren’t to demoralise Senegal for too long and deep into the second half they found the breakthrough as Burkina Faso failed to clear a corner and the ball fell to PSG’s Abdou Diallo in the six yard box for him to force home.

They doubled their lead six minutes later when Mané took advantage of some sloppy defending to set up Gueye to take a stab at goal with the ball hitting Bamba Dieng on the way into the empty net.

Burkina Faso made it a tricky last ten minutes when Blati Touré bundled home Charles Kabore’s cross but Mané burst away on a counter attack before chipping the goalkeeper to put the game beyond doubt.

Senegal have set up a final on Sunday with the winners of Egypt v Cameroon.
