Zidane Iqbal will not play for FC Utrecht again this season after the midfielder suffered a knee injury in the away match against Go Ahead Eagles on Sunday. The club have announced that the former Manchester United academy graduate will have to undergo surgery.

Remarkably, Iqbal still managed to complete the match at De Adelaarshorst, but further examination revealed the seriousness of the injury. The 21-year-old Iraqi will undergo surgery in the short term and will then be sidelined for several months.

“I am, of course, disappointed that I will not be able to play for the rest of the season,” Iqbal said via the club channels. “It is a big disappointment, but my focus is now completely on the operation and the recovery. I want to thank the fans, my teammates and everyone at the club for their support, it means a lot to me.”

Iqbal, who has played seventeen international matches for Iraq, settled at the Domstad in the summer of 2023, where he played little in his first season. However, he has steadily become a regular this term, appearing 18 times this season as a starter for Ron Jans’ team.
