Sean Dyche claims Tottenham Hotspur Harry Kane could have joined Burnley for £7m in 2014

According to former Burnley manager Sean Dyche, Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane could have joined the Clarets eight years ago for a fee of £7million.

He, however, failed to sign the English striker as Burnley were in the market for a player that would cost them about £3million. Tim Sherwood was Spurs’ manager at the time and it was he who quoted the valuation to Dyche.

At that point, Kane was largely unproven and came on the back of a 2013-14 season where he managed to score three goals and provide two assists in 10 league games. Dyche revealed in a conversation on Ben Foster’s ‘Fozcast‘ (h/t Sun):

“I phoned up about him and at the time, I think it was Tim Sherwood, immediately said £7m and we were in the market for like three.”

Burnley, who had just been promoted to the Premier League that summer, did sign a striker during that transfer window. Marvin Sordell and Lukas Jutkiewicz were signed by Dyche, who scored a total of one goal in a combined 43 appearances in the 2014-15 season.

Kane went onto have a breakthrough campaign himself, scoring 31 times and providing six assists in 51 games across all competitions. It could have been very different for Kane had he joined Burnley, that’s for sure.

He would have had to compete for starts with the then Burnley superstar and perhaps may not have risen to worldwide stardom as quickly as he did at Spurs. He is now our main man in attack alongside Son Heung-min, Dejan Kulusevski, and newly-signed Richarlison.

Burnley, meanwhile, were relegated in the 2014-15 season but came back up again the very next campaign. They stayed in the PL until this summer when they dropped to Division 2 once again.

Dyche was sacked by the Clarets in April 2022 in a frantic effort perhaps to escape the drop. It didn’t work. They are now managed by former Manchester City defender Vincent Kompany.
