Bastian Schweinsteiger has criticised Germany manager Joachim Löw for his decision to exile Jérôme Boateng and Thomas Müller from the national team.

The Bayern Munich duo, along with Borussia Dortmund’s Mats Hummels, have been deemed surplus to requirements as Löw beds younger players into the senior set-up.

However, Schweinsteiger believes the policy is flawed as world class players are being forced into premature international retirement.

“Will you completely leave out Müller and Boateng, who were significantly involved in the treble win in 2020?” the 36-year-old asked in an interview with kicker.

“If I were the national coach, Boateng and Müller would be in the national team. But I am not the national coach.”

Schweinsteiger, along with the three aforementioned discarded veterans, was a key member of the German team that won the 2014 World Cup in Brazil with Löw at the helm.

But he fails to see the logic in his former manager’s refusal to bring 32-year-old Boateng, in particular, back into the fold.

“When I talk about defence, I could also mention [Leonardo] Bonucci or the Spaniard Sergio Ramos,” the Bavaria native said.

“We currently have a central defender in this class in Germany – and I don’t see that through Bayern’s glasses.”

Schweinsteiger left Bayern in 2015, spending time at Manchester United and then MLS side Chicago Fire before retiring in 2019.
