It has now been announced that the Saudi Arabia PIF will be cutting international spending from 30 per cent to between 18-20 per cent.
However, this will not affect their commitment to Newcastle United.
The Telegraph report that their information is that despite the announcement, the Saudi Arabia PIF will continue to invest in the football club.
The newspaper report saying that due to Newcastle United being part the PIF’s existing portfolio, NUFC not affected.
The indication is that the Saudi Arabia PIF announcement is more to do with future projects and investments.
The Telegraph saying that this is a resassurance for Newcastle United fans that the controlling shareholders are still willing to invest in a new stadium and in the general growth of the club (their investment!).
However, they add that obviously this still does not help with the ongoing PSR issues.
They report that senior Newcastle United sources have told them that funds to spend in January will be limited.
That if say we finally get the (what many fans see as) the essential new first choice right winger, then that would almost certainly need to be balanced by a player sold, either in January or next summer, within this accounting period that runs up to 30 June 2025. The Telegraph saying that they understand that Brentford winger Bryan Mbeumo has been discussed as a likely target.
Although Newcastle are keen to strengthen their squad, if a big money signing is made in the winter window the club would have to sell someone in the summer.
With Anderson and Minteh sold to settle PSR balances over the last three year period of signings, fans had hoped that this would mean a better year to follow in terms of flex to spend on new signings.
However, the report says that built into the willingness for Newcastle United to spend big on Marc Guehi, was an expectation that the likes of Trippier and Wilson would be moved on, as two of the club’s biggest earners and obviously any transfer fees banked, also a bonus.
Those two are still at the club though and the new enhanced contract for Anthony Gordon has also not been cheap.
So whilst Newcastle United do have the ability to spend in these next two windows, exactly how far they can go with that spending,, looks largely to depend on moving players out.
