AJ Auxerre 0-2 Olympique de Marseille
THE MATCH
OM coach Igor Tudor made seven changes to his line-up following the 1-0 win over Clermont Foot 63 at the Orange Vélodrome less than 72 hours earlier. Sánchez was among the players to drop out of the starting XI, but Gerson was one of those to come in and he opened the scoring in the seventh minute at the Stade de l’Abbé-Deschamps. Cengiz Ünder hit the post, and the Brazilian followed in to score from the rebound.
Auxerre created little in the way of clearcut chances and Marseille might have doubled their lead midway through the second half, but substitute Nuno Tavares hit the post with his shot from range, and Luis Suárez’s follow-up was saved by home goalkeeper Benoît Costil.
Marseille made the points safe six minutes from the end, as Mattéo Guendouzi – who had also come off the bench – cut the ball back for Sánchez to score with a first-time finish. Tudor’s side saw the game out and they have now enjoyed five wins and a draw in six league outings this season, ensuring they will end the weekend in a share of the lead at the top of the table at the very least.
THE PLAYER: Alexis Sánchez
The Chilean scored his third goal in Marseille colours, following his brace in the 3-0 win at OGC Nice last weekend and then his missed penalty against Clermont in midweek. Rested at kick-off in Burgundy, he is sure to be back in the side from the start when Marseille begin their Champions League Group D campaign away to Tottenham in North London on Wednesday.
THE STAT: 6
This is the sixth season in the 21st century in which Marseille have remained unbeaten through their opening six matches. They have finished on the podium on each of the previous five occasions, most recently last season.
