Last season’s Serie A runners-up Inter Milan make a manageable-looking trip to the Stadio Luigi Ferraris to encounter relegation-threatened Sampdoria on Monday night.
Dejan Stankovic’s men were minutes away from returning to the win column in Serie A for the first time since early January before a stoppage-time penalty denied La Samp a win over Monza last Monday.
Matteo Pessina struck home a 99th-minute spot-kick to hand the top-flight debutants a dramatic 2-2 home draw, which still was sufficient to knock Sampdoria down from a five-match losing run in all competitions.
That was a small consolation for the Genoa-based outfit, as they start this round a whopping nine points off safety, with their 11-campaign Serie A stay under serious threat for the first time in a while.
In stark contrast to Sampdoria’s abysmal spell of form, visiting Inter seem to be picking up the pace after a patchy four-game league start to the new calendar year (W2, D1, L1).
They came from behind to beat whipping boys Cremonese 2-1 on their last Serie A travel before talismanic forward Lautaro Martinez inspired them to a 1-0 derby win over AC Milan last weekend.
Simone Inzaghi’s charges head into this round as Napoli’s nearest title challenges, yet a substantial 13-point gap between the sides effectively rules Inter out of the Scudetto race.
Sampdoria
Stankovic’s job at Ferraris could be on the line after Sampdoria lost six consecutive home matches in Serie A without scoring for the first time since 1976.
But after the aforementioned draw at Monza marked only the second time this season that the league’s lower goalscorers have netted multiple goals, La Samp will fancy their chances against their esteemed visitors.
Another scoring blank, though, would see Sampdoria meet an unwanted record, as after losing their last two top-flight games against Inter 3-0, they could fail to score in three straight H2Hs for the first time since 1950.
Inter Milan
Inter’s habit of running riot against Sampdoria has seen them register nine victories in their last 11 top-flight H2Hs (D1, L1), though they’ve been winless on their two most recent visits to Ferraris in Serie A (D1, L1).
While the odds suggest the Nerazzurri should have a walk in the park, their indifferent away record in Serie A this term (W5, D1, L4) means they cannot take anything for granted.
Inter’s last five league travels have fluctuated between different outcomes (W3, D1, L1), with each of their three wins coming by a single-goal margin.
Sampdoria (3-4-3): Emil Audero; Bruno Amione, Bram Nuytinck, Koray Gunter; Alessandro Zanoli, Michael Cuisance, Harry Winks, Tommaso Augello; Filip Djuricic; Manolo Gabbiadini, Sam Lammers.
Inter (3-5-2): Andre Onana; Milan Skriniar, Francesco Acerbi, Alessandro Bastoni; Matteo Darmian, Nicolo Barella, Marcelo Brozovic, Hakan Calhanoglu, Federico Dimarco; Lautaro Martinez, Romelu Lukaku.

The two sides are miles away in terms of both form and confidence, with Sampdoria being up the creek without a paddle long before Stankovic’s arrival.
Whether or not his managerial future in Genoa depends on the outcome of this clash, we expect Inter to inflict more damage on their hosts’ slim survival hopes.
