To say things aren’t going well at RWDM at the moment would be an understatement. The side sit bottom of the Pro League, have not won for weeks and are about to compete in the relegation play-offs. In their previous two games they have shipped seven goals. Off the pitch, things are also not going well. The club have just terminated the loan deal for defender Moussa Sissako from Russian side FC Sochi.
Sissako certainly cannot be surprised by this decision. The former PSG and Standard Liege defender posted an image on social media of him wearing his brothers jersey. His brother, Abdoulaye Sissako, also plays in the Belgian Pro League. The 25-year-old plays for Kortrijk, now a direct competitor for RWDM in the relegation play-offs. It was unlikely that Moussa would have been able to play due to injury, but the principle of wearing the jersey of another team given the current circumstances is something that RWDM could clearly not allow to go unnoticed.
While Sissako’s camp have argued that the dismissal was only done to save wages given the injury, it is hard to argue this case given that the two sides will be going head to head in a few weeks to try and avoid relegation to the second tier of Belgian football. For RWDM, this would be an immediate return after just one season, with many fans blaming the interference of now club President John Textor over the summer.
Sissako remains under contract with Sochi until 2025, having left Standard Liege in the summer of 2022 to join the Russian side. He had previously come through the academy at PSG before joining Standard for around €400k in 2020 following a loan spell.
