Rose Lavelle could be set to watch the upcoming USWNT friendlies and Concacaf W Championship from the bench after being ruled out of OL Reign’s match on Saturday with an ankle injury.

The player was a late addition to the team’s injury report, with the announcement coming in just half an hour before kick off against Angel City FC. Reign head coach Laura Harvey addressed the situation after the match, revealing Lavelle picked up the lesion during training a day prior.

“She got hurt in training yesterday. We did a late fitness test to see if she would be okay, and we didn’t think it was worth the risk,” said Harvey. “If (the injury) had happened on Wednesday, she would be fine to play today. I don’t have too many concerns with her going away now.”

While Harvey remains optimistic, Lavelle’s tendency for injuries could see her benched for the upcoming friendlies and certain Concacaf W Championship matches. But the player is key as the USWNT hope to secure a ticket to the 2023 World Cup and 2024 Paris Olympics.

Lavelle has been a standout so far this season, earning her place in the Challenge Cup Best XI and the NWSL Team of the Month in May. She’s also slowly become an integral part of head coach Vlatko Andonovski’s starting lineup, occupying the No. 10 with ease.

But should Lavelle be ruled out, Andonovski could call on Lindsey Horan, Kristie Mewis or Taylor Kornieck, who remains uncapped with the US women’s national team. With a strong roster.
