Leon Goretzka comments on his Bayern Munich future

Last summer, a move to the Premier League appeared to be a foregone conclusion for Bayern Munich midfielder Leon Goretzka. Manchester United and West Ham had shown significant interest in the former Schalke star, but Goretzka decided to fight for his place in Thomas Tuchel’s side.

This season, the 29-year-old has shown why he is still an important member of this Bayern Munich side, despite his partnership with Joshua Kimmich beginning to fade. Instead, Goretzka has been able to shine alongside either Konrad Laimer or Aleksandar Pavlović, with the latter taking the place of Kimmich in the Bayern midfield.

However, as recently reported, Bayern are looking to rebuild their midfield this summer, with a ‘number six’ deemed a priority. This has seen Der Rekordmeister linked with Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong, but speaking to Bild, Gortetzka stated that he has no intention of leaving Bavaria:

“From my point of view, everything is clear: my contract runs until 2026, and there is no reason to think about a change… I have a new role in our system. Right from the start, I wanted to accept and implement what the coach expected of me.”

With the aim for Goretzka now to fight for a place in Julian Nagelsmann’s Germany side for EURO 2024—after losing his spot in the recent round of international friendlies—the full focus will be on the remainder of the season. For Bayern, the Champions League trophy is still on the cards, and Goretzka commented on the task at hand:

“Now it’s all about a semi-final against Real Madrid. That will be a huge challenge.”

It is clear to see that the 29-year-old considers his future to be at Bayern. However, all could change depending on who will be in the dugout for Der Rekordmeister next season and whether Goretzka has a role to play under the new leadership.
