Netherlands head coach Ronald Koeman has asked for Xavi Simons to continue at PSV Eindhoven for another season amid heavy exit speculation.

The prodigious Dutch talent has revived his career at PSV this season since leaving Paris Saint-Germain last summer after he had struggled for game time at the French capital club.

The former Barcelona academy graduate has proven himself as one of the best players in Eredivisie this season, netting a league-high 15 goals and providing eight assists.

Simons was rewarded with a maiden call-up to the Dutch national squad at the 2022 World Cup and has also been tipped to leave PSV this summer, with some of Europe’s top clubs circling him.

Premier League trio Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool have registered their interest in the 20-year-old, while PSG are also working on his return.

The Ligue 1 giants are keen to trigger the €12 million buyback clause in his PSV contract, which will be valid until 2024. However, Koeman has advised Simons against an exit.

“I think it would be very good for him to stay at PSV for another year,” Koeman said (h/t Mundo Deportivo).

“I’m not the right person to expose what we’re talking about, but these are steps that are extremely important for a player. I consider Xavi a guy who weighs his choices very well.”

“I think he can grow to the number 10 position. He has great talent and is already very important at PSV.”

Simons recently stated that he is pleased with life at PSV and would hold talks with the club’s director Marcel Brands in the summer to decide on his future.

PSV are unwilling to sell him in the summer as they plan to present him with a new contract to remove his existing buyback clause.
