Belgian striker Romelu Lukaku has opened up on his disappointing return to Chelsea.

Last summer, the prolific striker lifted the Serie A title with Inter Milan before opting to re-join former club Chelsea in a deal worth a staggering £102m.

However, despite returning to Stamford Bridge as the world’s most expensive player in accumulative transfer fees, Lukaku’s homecoming will go down as one of the sport’s most disappointing deals.

Although the Belgium international netted a brace on his second senior debut against rivals Arsenal, he failed to replicate that form throughout the rest of the season.

Seemingly giving up on trying to get the 29-year-old firing, Thomas Tuchel, with the backing of new owner Todd Boehly, agreed to part ways with the former Inter Milan forward.

Allowing the commanding striker to return to the San Siro, this summer saw Lukaku move back to Italy on a season-long loan, and now back at his old stomping ground, the Antwerpen-born striker has opened up on his return to London 12 months ago.

Speaking to DAZN, as quoted by Football London’s Adam Newson, Lukaku said: “I had the chance to go back and thought I would be a hero, but that wasn’t the case.

“In March, when I heard there was an opportunity to return here [to Inter], I didn’t say anything.”
