Tottenham linked Bayer Leverkusen defender Edmond Tapsoba
Bayer Leverkusen centre-back Edmond Tapsoba is reportedly Tottenham’s ‘top target’ as Ange Postecoglou looks to bolster his defence.
Spurs conceded a woeful 63 goals in the Premier League last season, which was ultimately the main reason they finished in eighth place in the table.
Now Postecoglou is looking to bring in multiple defenders this summer, as well as letting some of his current players go.
It has been reported that Ben Davies, Davinson Sanchez and Japhet Tanganga will all be allowed to leave Tottenham.
The London club will have to bring in replacements. As previously reported by Football365, Wolfsburg’s Micky van de Ven is one potential incoming.
The 22-year-old is statistically the quickest centre-back in the Bundesliga and has been on Postecoglou’s radar for some time.
Spurs are currently in talks over signing Van de Ven. They may have to pay in excess of €30m (£25.7m) but he has already told Wolfsburg that ‘he wants to join’ Tottenham.
However, transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano has reiterated that Van de Ven is not Tottenham’s primary target.
On Twitter, he wrote: “Tottenham are still considering Edmond Tapsoba as top target but no official bid yet — while talks will continue for both Tapsoba and van de Ven this week.
“Final decision on new CB will depend also on asking price/negotiations with Leverkusen and Wolfsburg.”
Tapsoba is widely considered to be one of the best defenders in the Bundesliga so he could prove to be an excellent signing for Tottenham.
Since arriving at Leverkusen in 2020, the 6ft4 centre-back has made 137 appearances across all competitions. In the process, he has scored five goals.
While Tapsoba is considered to be a vital player at Leverkusen and is under contract until 2026, it is believed the 24-year-old is keen on a switch to the Premier League.
However, he will not come cheap. Previous reports suggest that the German club have slapped a £60m price tag on Tapsoba so Spurs will have to make a big offer to have any chance of signing him.
Tottenham continue to push for both Tapsoba and Van de Ven and they still have a good chance of signing both players this summer, despite them being fairly expensive.
If so, it will be interesting to see how they slot into Postecoglou’s team next season.
The Australian manager has generally opted to use a back four at his previous clubs. This means that Cristian Romero may be dropped from Tottenham’s starting XI to make room for the Bundesliga pair.
But, given Spurs’ defensive record last season, a shake-up may be exactly what they need to climb the Premier League table again.
