Roman Abramovich’s Chelsea statement may cost him his freedom in Russia

Roman Abramovich was already in a very sticky situation regarding his ownership of Chelsea, and things are only getting stickier, the Daily Mail noted today.

The oligarch has deep ties to Vladimir Putin, the Russian president leading an invasion of Ukraine, in the face of near universal global outcry.

Abramovich is too deeply tied to Putin to escape his association, so he last week he announced he would be selling Chelsea. But it might not be that simple. His statement that he was selling the club mentioned “the war in Ukraine,” a phrase which has now effectively been outlawed in Russia thanks to a draconian new law that effectively prevents open discussion of the invasion, and bans any reference to it in a negative light – including the very words “war” and “invasion.”

While many in the UK were condemning Abramovich for a lack of force in condemning Putin, it seems in Russia he will have the opposite problem.
