América’s bright start to the Guard1anes 2021 campaign continued with a win over Puebla at the Estadio Azteca on Saturday.

Santiago Solari’s side dominated the opening half, but were unable to make it count where it mattered.

América should have taken the lead two minutes before the break when Emanuel Aguilar sent a fantastic free-kick towards the top corner.

However, Puebla goalkeeper Antony Silva pulled off a spectacular save to keep the effort out, and Santiago Naveda was unable to steer the rebound home.

The tide turned after the interval, with the visitors spending prolonged periods of time in Azulcrema territory.

So it was against the run of play in the 66th minute when the hosts capitalised on some slack defending by Los Camoteros, leading Roger Martínez to rifle a low drive under Silva.

Guillermo Ochoa made an important save to keep América ahead in the closing stages, taking a blow to his thigh in the process.

The game ended on a sour note for Puebla when defender Maximiliano Perg was dismissed in stoppage time for a silly second yellow card.

There were no such worries for América who moved to to the top of the table above Cruz Azul courtesy of this win.
