Road to the Final: Mexico in the 2025 Gold Cup

MIAMI – Mexico reached the 2025 Concacaf Gold Cup Final for the 12th time and will meet the United States for the trophy on July 6 at NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas, USA.
The all-time winners in the tournament with nine trophies, Mexico will seek to extend its record and become the first nation to ten Gold Cup crowns.
Winners of the 2023 edition, Mexico kicked off its title defense with an unbeaten 2-1-0 record to win Group A with seven points. Javier Aguirre’s side opened with a 3-2 victory against the Dominican Republic, with goals from Edson Álvarez, Raúl Jiménez and César Montes.
El Tricolor followed up with a 2-nil win over Suriname thanks to a brace from Montes. Mexico closed out the Group Stage with a hard-fought goalless draw against Costa Rica.
The Quarterfinals presented Mexico coming out on top 2-nil against Saudi Arabia, with a strike from Alexis Vega and an own goal from Abdullah Madu.
In the Semifinals, Jiménez was the hero, scoring the lone goal in the 1-nil victory, with a powerful right-footed hit from the center of the box to send Mexico to the Gold Cup Final. Gilberto Mora provided the assist, the first for the 16-year-old in the tournament.
Montes has been the leading scorer for Mexico this tournament with three goals and is tied for second amongst the top scorers in the current edition. With his two goals, Jiménez has extended his Gold Cup career tally to nine.
Goalkeeper Luis Malagón has also been key to the current run with four clean sheets in five games and has only conceded two goals. Malagón recorded his fourth clean sheet of the tournament, equaling fellow Mexicans Jorge Campos (1998), Alfredo Talavera (2021), and Guillermo Ochoa (2009 and 2023).He is now one shutout away from tying the Gold Cup single-edition record of five clean sheets, held by Oswaldo Sánchez (MEX) in 2003 and Matt Turner (USA) in 2021
