Leeds United have been offered red-hot Montpellier striker Andy Delort, Football Insider understands.

The Ligue 1 club are looking to cash in on the super-quick forward this month as the financial crisis in French football continues to bite.

A recruitment source has told Football Insider that Leeds are among the Premier League clubs offered the chance to sign the player by Montpellier before the window shuts at the end of this month.

United are assessing forwards from Europe’s top five leagues who would profit from their tendency to flood the box with crosses.

But manager Marcelo Bielsa is reluctant to pay big money for a striker in the January window after the calamitous Jean-Kevin Augustin loan-to-buy deal this time last year.

The United manager would prefer an extended pre-season to work with new players and assimilate them into his defined playing style.

Delort’s age – he turned 29 last October – is also likely to count against him as far as Bielsa is concerned.

Nevertheless, he is a 10-times Algeria international with an impressive record in Ligue 1 and was ranked the fastest player in the league last season.

According to the official Ligue 1 website, Delort clocked a speed of 36.8 km/h against Saint-Etienne and that placed him ahead of fellow speedsters including Nice full-back Youcef Atal, Toulouse’s Kelvin Amian and PSG’s global star Mbappe.

Delort has scored nine goals and provided six assists from 18 league matches this season and has 35 goals from 87 Montpellier games.

Another French product on Leeds’ radar – the Mainz striker Jean-Philippe Mateta – is heading to the Premier League.

Mateta, who has been capped by France at Under-21 level, is closing in on a loan-to-buy move to Crystal Palace.
