Results: Rangers fans vote on James Tavernier’s place at Ibrox | OneFootball

Rangers fans have been voting over the selection of captain James Tavernier, and while there are a few comments suggesting they want him as winger, there is a general consensus over his place in the team.

Compared with the vote on Connor Goldson, which hit a ridiculous 96% advocating his dropping, it’s a lot more even on Tav, but Ibrox Noise now reports on the results of fan views over the ex-Wigan man.

Early indications suggest a slim majority of 59%, want the man dropped, and 41% would keep him in the team.

The sample size isn’t massive, around 700+ at the time of writing, but while it’ll ebb and flow a bit, the fans are more split on Tav than Goldson, but the slim majority do want to see him rested.

The winger suggestion?

The problem is Tav can’t beat men – not only does he lack the pace these days to even try, but he never could dribble and beat players with pure skill in the first place.

Think Kent at his best back in the day, think Cortes for the brief time we saw him – using rapid pace and trickery to get to the byline and get a cross in or cut in and shoot.

That just isn’t in Tavernier’s skill set, and it’s even less so now that he’s lost a tonne of his pace at 32.

The reason he gets goals and crosses is his overlapping runs as a fullback – he isn’t marked into the box because he’s a defender, and he doubles up with the winger to make space.

Oh, and his insistence on taking every single penalty.

But as a pure winger, he just wouldn’t work.

So he has a unique position, as a defender who can’t defend and an attacker who can’t attack. But a weird amalgamation of sort of both anyway.

If you’ve ever had coronation chicken you’ll know it looks questionable but tastes good – Tavernier is like reverse coronation chicken – it all looks great on paper but the actual substance isn’t quite there.
