Tottenham Hotspur have ‘nothing going on’ with Duje Caleta-Car

Journalist Fabrizio Romano has denied any talks between Tottenham Hotspur and Duje Caleta-Car. In fact, Spurs are yet to even open talks with Marseille for the Croatian international.

Cristian Romero is still the top target for the club. Negotiations are ongoing between Tottenham and Atalanta over a potential deal this summer.

Red Bull Salzburg signed Calteta-Car in 2014. He played 130 times for the Austrian club between 2015-2018. The now 24-year-old defender was an active member of Salzburg’s 2017-18 squad, which reached the UEFA Europa League semi-finals.

Marseille signed him in 2018 and since then, he has appeared 91 times for the French side so far.

Caleta-Car was the part of Croatia squad which reached the 2018 FIFA World Cup final in a losing effort to France. Fans of Sega’s Football Manager would already be aware of the potential of Caleta-Car in the game.

Failed move to Liverpool

Liverpool tried to sign the centre-back in January 2021. According to RMC Sport (h/t Metro), the move fell apart, with the report suggesting that the player did not board the flight. Marseille pulled the plug last minute after they failed to sign a replacement.

Tottenham Hotspur will be heavily in the market for centre-backs. The club has already announced the departure of Toby Alderweireld to Al-Duhail.

  • Harry Kane exit could lead Antoine Griezmann to Tottenham
  • Atalanta stand firm in their valuation for Tottenham target Cristian Romero
  • Fiorentina’s Dusan Vlahovic could be tempted to join Tottenham despite contract negotiations

According to Fabrizio Romano, a new defender will arrive at Tottenham Hotspur. Managing director Fabio Paratici has identified Cristian Romero as a top target of the summer. The player’s club value him at €55m.

However, Spurs have a ‘plan B’ in case Romero move cannot be materialized. Chelsea’s Kurt Zouma is one of the defenders named by Romano to be included in Tottenham’s plan.
