Although Paul Simonis recently extended his Go Ahead Eagles contract by a year, interest from other clubs continues to mount. As Sander Janssen of Voetball International has reported, West Bromwich Albion are the latest team to monitor the status of the 40-year-old coach.
After triumphing in the KNVB Cup final against AZ Alkmaar, Simonis entered into discussions with Go Ahead about an improved contract. Both parties quickly reached an agreement, and the manager signed a contract until the summer of 2027. That said, a limited buyout fee was included in that contract in case an interested club came forward.
As Sky Sports reported this week, the Go Ahead coach is one of the candidates for West Brom’s managerial position. Tottenham Hotspur assistant Ryan Mason is also in the Championship club’s thoughts.
Simonis also recently appeared on Ajax’s radar as a possible successor to Francesco Farioli. However, the Amsterdammers have now opted for the duo John Heitinga and Marcel Keizer.
Go Ahead will start preparing for the new season on the 20th of June. It will be Simonis’ second season as head coach, and the Deventer team can look forward to entering the league phase of the Europa League. Simonis’ previously experience includes four years as assistant to Kees van Wonderen at Go Ahead and SC Heerenveen.
