Newly-promoted Sunderland have wasted no time flexing their financial muscle in the transfer market – and their latest pursuit has certainly raised eyebrows. As reported by talkSPORT, the Black Cats made a shock attempt to land former Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin following his release from Goodison Park.
According to talkSPORT, “Sunderland made an ambitious play for former England striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin”, offering him a move to the Stadium of Light. Yet the 28-year-old, now a free agent, appears to be waiting for a move elsewhere, with “hopes a club higher up the Premier League food chain comes in for him.” His record of three goals in 26 league games last season may raise concerns, but his pedigree remains attractive to several top-flight clubs.
With Calvert-Lewin’s future undecided, Sunderland quickly pivoted to Marc Guiu, the teenage striker from Chelsea. Guiu is set for a season-long loan and brings European experience, having “scored six goals in seven Conference League appearances” last season. Despite being limited to just 70 minutes of league action under Enzo Maresca, the 19-year-old is highly rated.

Guiu will become manager Regis Le Bris’ eighth summer signing, and with over £122million spent, Sunderland are showing serious intent. Only the Premier League’s established elite have outspent the Wearside club.
Ahead of the new season, Le Bris has penned a new deal until 2028, expressing optimism: “The connection I have with the staff, players, and supporters has been natural, and we shared many great moments together.” He added, “There is a desire to become stronger… everyone has their own part to play, and we are all aligned.”
Sunderland’s return to the Premier League begins at home to West Ham on August 16, and fans will be watching closely to see whether Calvert-Lewin – or another marquee name – eventually arrives.
From a Sunderland fan’s perspective, this article encapsulates a growing sense of optimism. The fact that the club even approached a player like Calvert-Lewin shows just how far Sunderland have come since their days in the Championship. It’s a testament to the ambition of the ownership and the vision of Regis Le Bris.
That said, the rejection by Calvert-Lewin isn’t a setback – it’s a sign that the club is aiming for Premier League-level signings, even if not all of them will come off. His decision to wait for a “bigger” club is understandable, but it also opens the door for younger, hungry talents like Marc Guiu to step in and shine.
Guiu’s loan move looks like smart business. His European goal return suggests real potential, and fans will back him to deliver if given chances in front of goal. What’s exciting is that Sunderland have options, depth, and clearly a financial structure to compete.
As supporters, we can take pride in this level of ambition. Survival is the first priority, but with eight new signings and Le Bris committing long-term, there’s a feeling this season could be more than just a battle against relegation. The club is building – and building fast.
