Southampton confident of keeping hold of Tottenham target Danny Ings

According to the Hampshire Live, Premier League outfit Southampton are confident of holding on to star striker Danny Ings this summer amid interest from Tottenham Hotspur.

Ings signed for Southampton in 2018 from Liverpool, initially on loan before making the transfer permanent a year later. The 28-year-old enjoyed his most prolific campaign in 2019/20, finishing with 22 Premier League goals – the second-best in the competition for the season.

While Ings started the 2020/21 term on a similar note as well, injuries and his team’s poor form in the latter half meant he wasn’t able to hit the 20-goal mark. Nevertheless, the England international still managed to find the back of the net 12 times and set up four more in 29 league outings. (h/t Transfermarkt)

However, Ings’ future at Southampton has become a hot topic of discussion as he is entering the final year of his contract. This has led to interest in his services from Tottenham Hotspur this summer.

Tottenham will be needing a new centre-forward before next season, irrespective of what happens with Harry Kane. Spurs saw Carlos Vinicius’ loan deal run out and need an additional striker to support Kane, should he stay, or a new No. 9 in case he leaves. Ings, to that end, would be a fine addition to the squad.

However, Southampton remain confident that they will keep hold of their star striker this summer. Indeed, the Saints believe that Ings will sign a new deal. In case he does not, they are prepared to still keep him at St. Mary’s and risk losing him for free a year later. (h/t Hampshire Live)

With a new manager set to come in, it remains to be seen if Tottenham do pursue his transfer or look at different options. Regardless, Southampton’s firm stance on the matter could mean that the club are likely to find it hard to sign Ings this summer.
