Liverpool manager Arne Slot has provided clarity on Curtis Jones’ early substitution during the 2-1 Champions League victory over Lille at Anfield on Tuesday night. The midfielder, pivotal in the Reds’ opener, was withdrawn at half-time after sustaining a knock in the first half.
Jones played a crucial role in the first half, delivering the assist for Mohamed Salah’s 50th European goal, which set Liverpool on their way to a vital win. However, his evening was cut short as he felt discomfort late in the half. Slot explained Jones’ decision to come off, stating:
“There was a moment in the game where he felt [something], and he said let’s play for five more minutes and then see how it is, but [then] he said he had to go off at half-time.” Photo: IMAGO
Slot also discussed Liverpool’s broader approach to managing player fitness, particularly in a congested fixture list. He revealed that substitutions for Ryan Gravenberch and Dominik Szoboszlai were pre-planned to protect them from excessive fatigue. Similarly, Conor Bradley’s withdrawal was a precautionary measure, aimed at avoiding the risk of late injuries.
“Conor, the idea was to play 90, but in the end, you could see that it got tougher for him in terms of load. You don’t want to take the risk of him getting injured in the last few minutes.” Photo IMAGO
Despite these adjustments, Liverpool’s victory ensured their progression into the Champions League’s top eight with an impressive 21 points. Slot acknowledged the importance of balancing ambition with player health, adding:
“We wanted to win this game, but we were also aware of the need to manage the load.”
As fans await further updates on Jones, his absence will be keenly felt if the knock proves more serious than initially hoped.
