Flamengo manager Renato Gaúcho lamented the absence of midfielder Giorgian de Arrascaeta following his side’s derby loss to Fluminense on Saturday.

The 27-year-old was sent back to Brazil after sustaining an injury on international duty with Uruguay recently.

He was one of several absentees for the Rubro-Negro, including Gabriel Barbosa, Bruno Henrique, Pedro, and David Luiz.

Andreas Pereira, who is on loan from Manchester United, filled in for de Arrascaeta, but Gaúcho admitted afterwards that it was too big a task for the recent arrival.

“They have different characteristics. When Arrascaeta doesn’t play, we need to improvise. Andreas is a steering wheel and has helped us, but he doesn’t have the same characteristics.

“It’s not overnight. Arrascaeta is lacking in any team, he is a different player. And it’s not just Arrascaeta’s injury, but it’s no excuse.”

The defeat leaves Flamengo’s Brasileirão hopes hanging by a thread as they trail leaders Atlético Mineiro by 13 points, with two games in hand.

They will hope to leave their league woes to one side on Wednesday when they take on Athletico Paranaense in the second leg of their Copa do Brasil semi-final (aggregate 2-2).
