FC Barcelona could be crowned as the LaLiga champions once again on Thursday night, if they can claim all three points against local rivals RCD Espanyol in the latest edition of the Derbí Barceloní.

It’s a familiar scenario for the Blaugrana, who were confirmed as the 2022/23 LaLiga winners following a 2-4 win over Espanyol at the Estadi Cornellà-El Prat.

But those celebrations were quickly soured when, shortly after the final whistle sounded, Barça were chased off the pitch by a number of home fans who weren’t best pleased to see their biggest rivals lift their 27th league title on their turf.

Pitch invasion aside, Hansi Flick’s men will look to force more celebrations in Cornellà on Thursday by picking up three points against los Periquitos. Barça will be able to claim their 28th LaLiga title on Thursday with a win against Espanyol – but if Real Madrid fail to beat Mallorca on Wednesday, the Blaugrana will have the title wrapped up before a ball is even kicked in Cornellà.

The result of Wednesday’s match could affect Flick’s ideology heading into the Derbí Barceloní. If Real Madrid win against Mallorca, the 60-year-old would be expected to deploy a full-strength lineup – but anything less than three points for los Blancos could see the German opt to name a rotated side after a gruelling season.

Kick-off at the Estadi Cornellà-El Prat is scheduled for 20:30 BST [21:30 CEST] on Thursday 15 May.
