Le Mans announced Tuesday in a statement that Réginald Ray was its new coach. Former player of the club (1997-1999) and having already taken charge of the first team from February to May 2020, the 54-year-old technician succeeds Brazilian coach Cris, who was dismissed in early November.
The former Paris FC and Valenciennes coach will be charged with bringing the club closer to the top two promotion spots to Ligue 2. It will be a tough task, as Le Mans currently sit 11th with four wins, three draws, and five defeats – yet are only two points off Versailles, who are currently in second.
What further proves the madness of the National 1 season is that Le Mans are only one point away from the six-team relegation zone. Both the constraints of the new promotion and relegation places, which were implemented to allow Ligue 1 and Ligue 2 to pass to 18 teams, has turned France’s third tier into one of the tightest contests seen in recent history, with no clear winners or losers by November.
