Referee Mario Sole Ferrieri Caputi has won praise for her handling of Inter Milan’s win over Torino, including the red card decision.

Today’s print edition of Rome-based newspaper Corriere dello Sport, via FCInterNews, evaluate the female referee’s performance at 6.5/10.

Ferrieri Caputi was the lead referee in an all-female refereeing team for yesterday’s match.

This was an historic moment for Serie A.

The Italian top flight in the men’s game has used female referees in both head referee and assistant referee roles in the past.

But there had never been an all-female crew on the pitch.

In the VAR booth, however, male referee Aleandro Di Paolo was on hand.

The appointment of Ferrieri Caputi as the head official and three other female referees sent a message about women’s inclusion in football from Serie A.

The 33-year-old had previously officiated seven Serie A matches this season, and eight in Serie B.

Overall, Caputi looked more than comfortable handling a match featuring the Italian champions.

There was one major turning point in the match, though.

This concerned a foul by Torino midfielder Adrien Tameze on Inter’s Henrikh Mkhitaryan.

The Armenian had been rushing towards goal with the ball at his feet.

Caputi’s initial decision was to give Tameze just a yellow card for his foul on Mkhitaryan.

The Inter player was still somewhat wide of the goal, and there were doubts about whether Tameze was truly the “last man” – with defender Matteo Lovato also rushing back to cover.

However, the VAR advised Caputi to go back and have a second look.

The referee decided to change her decision. She saw the situation as one in which Mkhitaryan would have had a clear goalscoring opportunity had Tameze not fouled him.

Therefore, Ferrieri Caputi handed a red card to the former Atalanta and Hellas Verona player. In the view of the Corriere, this was correct.
