Defender Francesco Acerbi is back in training ahead of Inter Milan’s Serie A match against Lazio this weekend.

This according to to Italian news outlet Gazzetta.it. The outlet report that Acerbi won’t necessarily play against his former club, but that he will be in the squad for the match.

Acerbi has been out with injury for Inter’s last few matches.

The former Lazio and Sassuolo defender suffered some groin pain during training last month.

The most recent match in which Acerbi played for Inter was the derby against AC Milan. The 36-year-old started that match, and in fact scored Inter’s opening goal in the 2-1 victory.

That was the match in which Inter clinched the Serie A title.

But after that match, Acerbi suffered a groin problem in training.

It has not been a serious injury for the Italian international. However, there has hardly been any reason to take risks with the fitness of a key starter given that Inter are no longer fighting for any trophies.

Therefore, Acerbi has been on the sidelines for matches against Torino, Sassuolo, and Frosinone.

It has been another former Lazio defender, Stefan de Vrij, who has started in the centre of Inter’s back three for all of those matches.

But according to the Gazzetta, Acerbi has returned to training.

The 36-year-old made a return to full training with the rest of his teammates in today’s session.

Therefore, there is no doubt that Acerbi will be fit for Sunday’s match against the Biancocelesti, a club with whom he spent four seasons as a player.

However, Acerbi will more than likely begin the match.

And then there is no guarantee of seeing the Italian international come off the bench as a substitute either.

There is, still, hardly any reason to take risks with the defender’s fitness.

But as the Gazzetta notes, this is perhaps above all important news in view of the upcoming Euros.

Acerbi could play an important role at the heart of the Italian national team’s defense at the tournament in Germany which kicks off next month.

Therefore, Azzurri coach Luciano Spalletti will undoubtedly be closely following Acerbi’s fitness.
