Jokull Andresson's move away could see Coniah Boyce-Clarke stay at the Select Car Leasing Stadium beyond the end of this summer.

With Reading failing to make any signings so far this summer, they won't be able to loan out many players in the short term.

This is a huge shame because some of their youngsters could benefit from loan moves away from the Select Car Leasing Stadium.

In defence, at both full-back and centre-back, there isn't a surplus of options at this stage, with the need to have a strong U21's side in mind.

The Royals also don't have a huge number of central midfield options and they are lacking depth on the wing and in the striker department as well.

However, the goalkeeping department is one area where the Royals have been able to sanction a loan exit.

Jokull Andresson, who spent last season on loan at Carlisle United, has been granted a loan exit to Icelandic second-tier side Afturelding.

He may have only joined on a short-term loan, with his temporary stay there set to expire at the end of October, but that takes his new loan team until the end of the season.

Andresson could potentially be loaned out again after that, but regardless of what happens, it doesn't seem as though the keeper features in Ruben Selles' plans in the short term.

State of play in Reading FC's goalkeeping department

Looking at the Royals' current goalkeeping options, they probably have the license to let another shot-stopper go.

Joel Pereira and David Button look set to be the Royals goalkeeping options in the matchday squad for the 2024/25 campaign, but there may be a battle for who becomes the third-choice keeper.

With so many other areas to strengthen, the goalkeeping area is one that Selles may not want to look at in the coming weeks, so it would be difficult to see more than one other keeper depart the SCL Stadium before the summer window closes.

Coniah Boyce-Clarke could be retained by Reading FC

With Dean Bouzanis failing to live up to expectations during his time at the SCL Stadium and not doing enough to force his way ahead of the likes of Button and Pereira in the pecking order, it wouldn't be a surprise to see him leave the club again, either on loan or permanently.

Bouzanis is 33 now and hasn't done enough to put himself in the shop window, despite spending time on loan at Sutton United last term, so the Berkshire side wouldn't be able to command a big fee if they sold him.

With this in mind, a loan exit could be just as beneficial for the Royals as a permanent exit, as long as the loan club pays a decent chunk of the Australian's wage.

The player may also be keen to secure an exit, knowing that he doesn't look set to be heavily involved for the Berkshire outfit during the 2024/25 campaign.

His contract expires in 2025, so a loan exit now could allow the stopper to make himself an attractive option for other EFL clubs ahead of his likely release.

Coniah Boyce-Clarke is another player who could benefit from a loan exit as he looks to develop, but if Bouzanis leaves, that could force the Jamaican to remain in Berkshire.

Boyce-Clarke was the club's third-choice option last term and with Andresson leaving, that could increase the chances of the former staying put.

The Royals could potentially sanction exits for both Bouzanis and Boyce-Clarke, but that would be a risk for two reasons.

Firstly, there are no guarantees that the club will be able to strengthen their goalkeeping area if both leave.

And secondly, if they can't, they don't have another stopper who has played for the Berkshire side at a senior level.

Keeping Boyce-Clarke for now would be a safe option, even if it harms his development, so the Jamaican needs to prepare to remain at the SCL Stadium beyond the end of the summer window.
