Marco Asensio was one of the revelations for Spain during their opening World Cup game against Costa Rica, with the forward starring in a number nine role.

In the aftermath of the victory, Asensio seemed quite content in his new role and was happy with the way Luis Enrique utilised him. With that in mind, a recent report from Diario AS has offered an update on his situation, suggesting his World Cup performances could greatly affect his future at Real Madrid.

Asensio’s current deal at Santiago Bernabeu, after all, expires at the end of the season. Many had initially expected him to depart the club on a free transfer in 2023, especially with Barcelona among the clubs interested in his services.

However, over the past few months, Asensio has fought back well and has been performing brilliantly when given the opportunity. His recent performances with the Spanish national team are just a testament to the improvements he has made as a player.

In addition to his experience and pedigree of playing in the final third, Asensio has even become a competent number nine, which should only help him make a case for earning a contract extension for Real Madrid.

This is because Los Blancos have always lacked a proper alternative for Karim Benzema. And with the club unlikely to pursue Erling Haaland until 2024, the option of having Asensio as a backup could be useful for Carlo Ancelotti. It may also help the player gain more prominence in the first team.

Therefore, everything indicates that Asensio could be set for a prolonged stay at Santiago Bernabeu. The player is open to the idea despite links with Barcelona recently. However, it will be interesting to how things transpire in the coming month.
