La Liga club Real Madrid have made Benfica’s emerging star Joao Neves their top priority for the summer transfer window, according to Real Madrid Exclusivo. The club had earlier ruled out a move for him but have changed their minds in recent weeks.
The Whites believe the youngster has immense potential and can become one of the best in his position. However, they aren’t alone in the race for the Neves. Manchester United and Barcelona are the other two major clubs running behind the player.
Coming through the ranks of Benfica, Joao Neves made his senior team debut in the winter of 2023. Since then, he has taken huge strides and has emerged as a reliable name for the club. He has earned a spot for himself in the starting lineup, all thanks to his excellent performances.

The 19-year-old has featured in 45 games this season, netting two goals and as many assists. He is averaging 2.4 tackles, 1.2 interceptions and 1 clearances per game. Though he mainly plays as a defensive midfielder, he can operate also in comparatively advanced positions (stats via whoscored).
Neves is an excellent reader of the game and makes good interceptions to negate threats. His dominance in the aerial duals and ability to make accurate tackles make him a valuable pick in the lineup. He also has a great passing accuracy rate of over 90%.
Real Madrid have recruited many talented youngsters over the past few years. They believe in nourishing those kids into a world-class player. Their plan for Joao Neves will be no different, given they manage to get his signature.
With Luka Modric leaving the club after this season, the Whites will need to bring in a new midfielder. Though Neves doesn’t have a similar playing profile, the Portuguese can link up with other stars in the midfield arena.
